Two compositions from the very beginning of the 19th century; two grandiose works of church music; two late works; representative compositions by two brothers, Joseph and Michael Haydn, who extracted enormous pleasure from the practice of mass composition for decades: there are so many things to write about this concert programme that brings Concerto Budapest into partnership with György Vashegyi and his internationally renowned Purcell Choir. The Mass in B-flat major (Harmoniemesse) benefiting from an emphatic and richly imaginative use of the entire wind section is the last great work of the more famous Haydn. It debuted in the Calvary Church at Kismarton on 8 September 1802. Less than one year later, on 16 August 1803, there was the first performance of a similarly late work by Joseph’s younger brother (five years separated the two) who worked in Salzburg. The valuable handwritten score of this mass is preserved in the National Széchényi Library in Budapest. For many years the mass by Michael Haydn, which was commissioned by the Viennese court, lay gathering dust. Largely thanks to the efforts of György Vashegyi, a domestic audience has the opportunity of rediscovering its beauty.
